theres a new day coming
it's coming fast
all these things will have passed
get ready,
get set,
get going down the road
i woke up in the morning light
and i saw the sun
i saw everything
that i thought i shoulda done
it all went away
quick as a wink
and i went back inside
and fixed me a drink

Hard Pan Clay
02:23
|
|||
on the move again
i'm wearing down my shoes again
on the road again
i'm going where i ain't never been
i got the right hand look
lean all the way to the left
i got a mean red book
and a star hanging over my bed
on the move again
i'm wearing down my shoes again
on the road again
i'm going where i ain't never been
got a big warm soup
got a big warm bed
and if you ever need either, babe
you know where to lay you head
on the move again
i'm wearing down my shoes again
on the road again
i'm going where i ain't never been
got a dozen fake names
got no address
just because i been away
doesn't mean i need you any less
on the road again
blowin out my shoes again
on the move again
i'm going where i aint never been
i got a home all over
i got love anywhere
a weary welcome
but my friends still want me there
got that hard pan left
got that hard pan right
got that hard pan clay
keep me up all night
on the move again
i'm wearing down my shoes again
on the road again
i'm going where i ain't never been
roll me over, lord,
take me home

Wage Theft Blues
03:38
|
|||
i walked with wind whistling down the line
all of their money used to be mine
since i haven't got a thing
blues round this land gonna sing
i walked in the doors of the liquor store
i saw my clothes reflected in the glass and the floor
i asked myself do i need me another
another drink, another job, another chance to get more
held out for hope, held my hand out for bread
i wanted dollars, i got dimes instead
asking myself to do it different,
but till then the blues are whistling, my friend
i didnt need anything
i wanted new shoes not no diamond ring
theres a man in the city with a name and address
and hes sitting pretty on half my paychecks
i walked with wind whistling down the line
half of that money used to be mind
since i haven't got a thing
blues round this land gonna sing
since i haven't got a thing
blues round this land gonna sing
we walked together in those midnight hours
all of that money used to be ours
since we haven't got a thing,
blues round this world gonna sing
since we haven't got a thing,
blues round this world gonna sing

Copper Buttons
02:50
|
|||
copper buttons on my jacket
hearts on my sleeve
i'm gonna make it outta here
yes i believe
yes i believe
yes i believe
i'm gonna make it outta here
yes i believe
doing a little walking
i make it around
i'm taking you with me
we're going downtown
go downtown
we'll go downtown
taking you with me
but we're going downtown
living in the country
where the air is free
they don't charge you nothing
so baby, you can breathe
baby you can breathe
baby you can breathe
they don't charge me nothing,
so baby, you can breathe
i'm heading for the station
im heading for the door
dont tell me bout my wristwatch
i wanna stay some more
i wanna stay some more
i wanna stay some more
dont tell me bout my wristwatch
i wanna stay, some more
copper buttons on my jacket
hearts on my sleeve
you can't tell me nothing
cause i believe
yes i believe
yes i believe
i'm gonna make it outta here
yes i believe
yes i believe
yes i believe
copper buttons on my jacket
hearts on my sleeve
I'm gonna make it outta here
cause i believe
yes i believe
yes i believe
i'm gonna make it outta here
yes, yes i believe

now if you've got my immortal soul
who will watch me when i toil
in the darkness and the dead of night?
i made my way up to philadelphia
and pittsburgh, pa
everybody there lord,
knows my name
everybody there, lord, knows my name
if i had to stay another week baby
would you do the same?
if i offered you my hand baby
would you take my name?
would you take my name?
now if you've got my immortal soul
who would watch me when i toil
in the darkness and the dead of night?

Out in the Tules
02:21
|
|||
can you be out in the tules anymore?
is that a place that exists?
is there anything left, anybody?
or have they strip mined it all,
strip-malled it all
tore it all down and replaced it with
a million drywall monstrosities
and i'm paying to live in em
god what a nightmare it is
god what a nightmare
look what they've done to my home
look what they've done to it
gimme the delta back, give me the rivers back
gimme the mountains back
anything but this
lets see the salmon runs
and get up the mccloud river
get up the feather river
get up the sacramento river
or the american river
and blow out those levees
and blow down those dams
let's see some real waters flowing
out in the tules

Don't Be A Coward
01:51
|
|||
here's a song for the children
everybody wants to act bigger
everyboy wants to act tough
but nobody wants to run to me
down with their truck
i wanna die, yeah yeah yeah
i wanna die, die, yeah yeah yeah
a lot of talk, a lot of words
but nobody's willing to murder
a lotta big people,
a lotta small thoughts
die, i wanna die, yeah yeah yeah
i wanna die, i wanna die, yeah yeah yeah
well, the world is a-burning
and my life is a mess
if you think you've got the nerve
why not come collect?
die, i wanna die, yeah yeah yeah
i wanna die, wanna die, yeah yeah yeah
everybody's got their opinions
but all of mine are correct
and if you don't start hunting me down
i'm gonna snap your neck
i wanna die, i wanna die, oh yeah yeah yeah
i wanna die, die, yeah yeah yeah
everybody wants to act bigger
nobody wants to act tough
everybody wants to run to me
down with their truck
die, die, yeah
hunt me down,
i wanna die
but let me get to the end of the album first

Talkin' WPA Sidewalks
05:12
|
|||
heres a story about a town I've lived in
for a little too long
WPA sidewalks, they built 'em in '41,
everybody in my town is always on the run
- but where are they going?
went down to the store the other day
all those people had to make way
for the new road going down
it's down by the river
it rolls past the hills
what are they gonna do with it
and who's footing the bills?
it better not be me.
sometimes I wake up with the sun,
get to see the dawn
it always beautiful,
just before the dust comes on
and I'm always a-walkin down that road,
the new one with all that asphalt
still sticky under your boots
not that I'd be noticing it,
my boots are dirty as hell.
where I live I can see the mountains
but they're too far away
they look down at me, tauntin' and tellin'
"you wanna get away,
babe, you wanna get away?"
you know I do,
why you gotta make fun of me for it, huh?
everybody in this town's moving round and round
they're moving so fast that they can't hardly be found
the stray dogs that run the streets
they're no friends of mine
and the children that live around here
ooh, they're dying to get out
no fun, no business, no nothing to do
so I raise my hat to you, little town
all your people, all the things going round
cause you've held on since '41,
before your race was even run
I can't do that.
I'm not nearly that old.
I'm gonna wake up with the dawn one day
it'll be the last one that I see
and I'll be heading outta this town,
just before I hit the sea
I wonder if they'll get that road finished
I wonder if they'll ever tear it down
I wonder if they'll ever tell themselves that they're done
fixing up this old town
and all the people living in it
they don't need no fixing
they just need to get somewhere else
less dust, less heat,
and maybe no mountains mocking you neither

Pride
02:41
|
|||
i woke up in the afternoon light
i heard some birds outside
as they flew away, i learned that day
whats the point in clinging to pride?
you gonna die clinging to pride
so when the years swallow our lives up
two strangers looking back
will you have settled all your scores
when the memory's faded black?
when the memory's faded black?
can you forgive our past?
i'm waking up with the sun, baby
and I'm feeling fine
and if you've got a problem with me, baby
that ain't no problem of mine
that ain't no problem of mine
how many long weeks will it have been
since i last spoke to you?
will these things have all gone out
and will the memories be shot through?
will that flame be burning in the middle of the night?
will you let yourself spin out like a satellite?
will you still be fighting with all your might
just to be the one who won?
just to be the one who won?
i woke up in the afternoon light
i heard the birds sing outside
and when they flew away, i learned that day
whats the point of clinging to pride?
I ain't gonna cling to pride
I ain't gonna cling to pride

who am i to deny myself a good time?
i'm coming right around the bend
i'm going a hundred miles per hour, baby
cause thats the only way that this ends
i've got a heavy load, but no broken bones
i swear to god, just as my blood does flow,
we're gonna see this out to the end
we're gonna see this out to the end
took the corner slow, i took the straight road fast
i saw the devil at the corner by the overpass
said for him a quick prayer, for myself another
we're gonna see this out to the end
i saw the desert skies and i tried to hide
wasn't no home for me
i saw the shining light come from the other side
as the road came up to see
i'm coming home, but my skeleton roams
in two hundred six area codes
if you need me again, give my femur a call
cause this won't be the way that it ends
i'm going a hundred miles per hour, baby
thats the only way that this ends

What Am I To You?
01:34
|
|||
catch you by the river like a fishing net
i'll put you back in the stream, give me a rest
can't be the same as it was last year
even back then when the waters was clear
if you were a carpenter and i was a plank
would you cut me down and measure my length
see my warps and all my lines,
lay me down like a board of pine
if i were a door would you measure my height
slam me shut in the dead of the night
would you slip right past quiet as a mouse
or would you put me in the front of your house?
if i were a man would you know me by now
if i were a field would you furrow and plow
if i were something else instead
would you still keep me beside the bed
what am i to you?
what am i to you?
if I were a carpenter and you were a plank
I would cut you down and I'd measure your length
I'd see all your warps and all of your lines,
lay you on the floor like a board of pine
if you were a door I would measure your height
wouldn't slam you shut in the dead of the night
I'd slip right past as quiet as a mouse
and you'd have a place in the front of my house
if you were a field i'd give you some fruit
if you were a-trapped i'd cut you loose
if you were needing anything else instead
i'd keep it in the very top shelf beside my bed
what am i to you?

Back Porch Blues
02:42
|
|||
back porch blues are here again
they're not going away
back porch blues are here again
but i cannot stay
i've been here for a long week
but i'd sell my soul for a day
i saw my friends last night
they bid me farewell
but everytime that i come along
lord, i raise me some hell
back porch blues are here again
but i cannot stay
i have never been at home, and it's
lord it's hard to get me away
back porch blues are here again
they're not going away
everyone that i know
wants me to stay

End of the Day
01:34
|
|||
leave only smiles,
take only scalps
turn everything over
and turn everybody out
it's the end of the day
and i'm heading home on my own
i'm easy to please,
i'm hard to impress
and nobody round here needs
another weight on their chest
so i'm heading home
it's the end of the day
and i'm heading home on my own again
some call it a crime,
some call it a life
but i know when i wake tomorrow
i'll be heading into the light
i'm heading home
it's the end of the day
i'm heading home
said everything that i'm gonna say
i'm heading home
